Another Study in Tribute to Francis Bacon. In preparation for a larger project on the subject, to be done in oil on canvas, these preliminary studies explore the options to create - with the visual means of the artist - a "scream" that appears so loud, so unbearable that the viewers can virtually can "hear" it. Taking up inspiration from Bacon's works, in this study the Pope's eyes seem to be covered or shielded behind some kind of veil. Another interpretation would be, that the screaming absorbs the Pope so completely that his vision is drastically blurred. At the same time, the basic colors - in particular the shades of deep red - seem to hold up the dignity and authority of the Pope. In this respect, the artist here frivolously deconstructs conventional ways of viewing and thinking.
