WALTHER FINEART GERMANY

Art comes from Making

Biography

Susanne Cäcilie Walther represents a unique variety of contemporary European Neo-Expressionism. Beholders often remark elements of Minimalism and Glitch. And always they see the handwriting of an artist who seems to have a childish joy in doing the wonky, the unfinished, the flawed, and even the dilettantish. Indeed, that’s Walther’s Trademark.

Walther’s artwork centers on persons: Persons from real life, but also from (day-) dreams. Central projects are inspired by personal relationships such as family and friends. This said, friendship, love, suffering and dying - all fundamental aspects of human existence - are recurring themes in Walthers artworks. No surprise, therefore, that actual political developments, such as war, enter her art world. In addition, Walther oftentimes portrays figures, in a style she calls "heads". And as a devotee of the famous British artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992), a considerable part of her artwork is inspired by Bacon's "Screaming Pope" theme, and beyond. Given all these emotionally laden subjects,  Walther oftentimes needs a retreat to find quietude again and new energy. Thus, she regularly dives into the meditative artwork of chinese ink painting, both classical and free styles, forms of art she particularly owes to her mentor Qi Yang. Since 2015, Susanne Cäcilie also, from time to time, exercises in the classical discipline of act painting with a live model.

Walther’s artworks leap at the viewer on a direct, almost instinctive basis. Her approach is experimental and playful, which the casual observer may take as wonky, amateurish or fragmentary. It is of course Susanne Cäcilie’s handwriting, her work being all about truthfulness and authenticity, as she defies whatever expectations there might be on aesthetics. This said, Walther is recognized for creating figures who in all their wonkiness come across full of soul, power and humaneness that allow them to uphold their dignity.

Susanne Cäcilie Walther masters a broad repertoire of techniques. She works on canvas and papers, oftentimes with spatulas. Her media are oil, acrylics, and ink, and occasionally self-made tempera and casein. Beyond that, Walther also masters aquarelle painting, a technique which is considered to be extremely difficult. In her drawings the prefers graphites, charcoal and pastels, but she uses markers and fineliners, as well. Susanne Cäcilie also likes to experiment with monotypes, as well as Japanese woodcut.
