42x29.7 cm ~ Painting, Graphite, Pastel
Inspired by Francis Bacon's work series on the theme "The Pope Screams", I present this theme in a drawing done by graphite and soft pastels. - Interestingly, Bacon himself had been inspired by Velazquez's "Portrait of Pope Innocent X" (ca. 1650), in which the Pope was portrait with a mouth firmly shut. My inspiration, however, goes beyond mere tribute to Bacon: Given the world's present status of global existential crises, to this measure unforeseen by reasonable humankind, it becomes imaginable that, one day, the Pope may appear 'screaming'.
